History

Friends of the Library are now Friends of Libraries and Literacy

Friends of the Library of Rio Rancho was formed in 1983 as a non-profit, public, 501(c)(3) volunteer charity to establish a library in Rio Rancho. The Friends raised money to build the Esther Bone Memorial Library and made significant contributions to building and furnishing the Loma Colorado Main Library.

For 37 years the Friends operated stores in the Rio Rancho Public Libraries and conducted monthly sales of community-donated books, recent magazines, CDs and DVDs. The profits were used to support the Libraries and to fund library programs for children, teens and adults. In 2018 the Friends and the City formalized their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

Sadly, in 2020 the Rio Rancho City administration unilaterally terminated the Memorandum of Understanding and dissolved the partnership that brought public libraries to Rio Rancho and helped make them great. Without the Memorandum, the Friends were forced to abandon their stores and leave City property.

However, as an independent non-profit public charity, the Friends continue to exist, to have book sales and to support literacy in a new location that is off city property. The Friends changed their name to Friends of Libraries and Literacy, Rio Rancho Inc. and expanded their mission to include “libraries and literacy in Rio Rancho and surrounding areas”.
